My idea is... More .Com Departments Open After Hours

It'd be great if... Everything was possible for customers to actually do after hours. So many departments close after hours it can barely be considered 24 hour customer service. Whether it's 1-2 people from every department or giving the phone representatives a little more leeway to help out with order editting/cancelling, installations, reward zone, etc

Job Description for the SM,EMM (by *personal information removed*)

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Sr Manager, Emerging Media Marketing must be able to, first of all, create an acronym for his or her title because saying the “Sr Manager, Emerging Media Marketing” each time the position is referred to will contradict one of the qualifications below: Efficiently manage one’s time. For the purpose of this job description, we will use “SM,EMM”, it’s up to you whether you wish to recognize the pause dictated by the comma in the title (however, please reread the qualification about time management).

The SM,EMM must be responsible, as this section suggests. Responsibility means being relied upon to make sound decisions on one’s own in accordance with the company message and be accountable for such decisions in the areas of strategy, budget and management. It also means that the employee mustn’t @ reply when the tweet called for the privacy of a DM. In emerging media, it is important to be authentic and accountable or someone will bust you. It is also important to remember that an organization has fewer than four hours to respond to any misleading or improper information posted online (such as videos taken by employees in the back of the store), therefore the SM,EMM must be available 24/7 in case of such emergencies.

This employee is required to understand as much as possible about the brands, products, initiatives and services of the company or, when in doubt, leverage the general public for the correct information since the internet has more information and has proven to be quicker to report it than any other medium.

There are a billion people in the world that can use the tools that the SM,EMM will have to use and there are a many who can tell a story, but few that can do both. The SM,EMM must be a master in the art of persuasive non-fiction through the channels of emerging media. Long gone are the days of epic public relations fables, today’s communications specialist must be eloquently pithy.

The SM,EMM must not only be virtual, but must interact with real people, as well. This position will serve as the liaison between the company and our agency partners. Developing a network to accomplish tasks is a must in this position and the SM,EMM should be an inspirational manager for all direct reports (a box of donuts goes a long way).

Be creative.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Basic qualifications are like the sign at the amusement park, “You must be this tall to ride.”

•	Equally be able to speak and write in proper English, but squeeze a message into as few characters as possible without sacrificing comprehension.
•	Understand the difference between dialogue and monologue--in other words--the difference between conversation and broadcast.
•	Efficiently manage one’s time. We realize that it’s very easy to get sucked into comments on status updates, so avoiding it when it isn’t in accordance with the company mission is a necessity.
•	The internet is the best place to lie—you can be anyone you want online—therefore the SM,EMM must be real and truthful. The “Poke in the Arm” test may be administered at the interview.
•	Be able to work with the following sites/tools: LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Plaxo, Google, Alltop, Backtype, Blogger, Ning, Tweetdeck, Seesmic, Squidoo, Twitter Grader, Friend or Follow, delicious, Slideshare, YouTube, Vimeo, StumbleUpon, Digg, PRWeb, Scribd, Flickr, WordPress, TypePad, Technorati, IceRocket, Tumblr, TipJoy, Alexa, Wikipedia, and BaseCamp (this list may change, in fact will change, with daily frequency).
•	Understand the following acronyms: RSS, SEM, SEO, PPC, CPM, CPC, LOL, IMHO, WTF, API, B2C, B2B, CTR, IM, PV, RON, WWW, TTYL, LMAO, ROTFLMAO, WYSIWYG and, most importantly, RTFM.
•	Own a smartphone (at least one) and have a bountiful data/text plan.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred qualifications are like paying for the picture that was taken at the end of the roller coaster ride; they’re nice, but not necessary.

•	The Triple Crown of social networking: 1000 Twitter followers, 500 Facebook friends and 250 LinkedIn connections.
•	Finalist in the speed-juggling of tasks across multiple browsers, browser tabs, desktop applications and devices.
•	Nimbly tactile; no fumble-fingers will be hired.
•	Understand and be able to operate under both intended and emergent strategies (be proactive and reactive).
•	Viral, but not contagious.

OTHER
It is a common misnomer that multi-tasking is a desired job requirement. We are looking for someone who realizes that multi-tasking means that nothing is getting your full attention. Therefore, we prefer that the SM,EMM be able to transition between tasks quickly and fluidly without loss of energy or heat.

Being in “the now” is a must in this day and age. Pavlovian responses in meetings to texts, cell phones calls, instant messages, email dings, Skype bloops or calendar alarms will not be looked upon with favor. We recommend the SM,EMM be able to show up to meetings with paper and pen.

Have read the following: Made to Stick, The Tipping Point, Good to Great, Cluetrain Manifesto, New Rules of Marketing & PR, Groundswell, Tribes, Here Comes Everybody, Naked Conversations, Freakanomics, and Wisdom 2.0 (applicant will be asked to provide a book report for each).

*personal information removed*

Wardo's Job Description Idea for the Emerging Media Marketing role

The term 'emerging media expert' may be an oxymoron. Perhaps it should be 'emerging media specialist' or even 'emerging media explorer'. After all it is just emerging.

It reminds me a bit of the early days, when you could find corporate job descriptions for Internet professionals demanding 10+ years of Internet-related experience in a field that was not really even 6 years old. Larry Ellison, Oracle CEO, in a keynote address he gave some years ago, observed that a calendar year was roughly equivalent to four Internet years – thus equating an Internet year with a corporate financial quarter. The rate of change on the Internet is fast and I would argue that the impact emerging media has makes change even faster.

I agree with George Colony from Forrester Research as he so aptly put it "Social [media] is like sex. It's fun to talk about and read about, but you can't truly comprehend unless you do it." An online presence of some magnitude is telling, but perhaps requiring 200+ friends/connections/followers is too arbitrary. Research suggests that your brain is hard wired to pay attention to about 150 people (Dunbar's number).

Perhaps instead one should focus on the transferable skills and career evolution of a candidate as well as his/her passionate attitude.

"For true experts realize that they don’t have all the answers, they are aware that surprises await in every endeavor, and they have the resources to deal with everything that is thrown at them." -Rick Mahn

For example take the role of Islands Caretaker for Tourism Queensland in Australia, or what has been termed the ‘Best Job in the World’. The role was a newly created position designed to help promote the Islands of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to the world. A 34-year-old charity fundraiser from Petersfield in Hampshire, UK was selected not only for his transferable skills (SCUBA diving and sailing) but his adventurous spirit, energy and passion for the outdoors.

Transferable skills for an Emerging Media Marketing role would probably include:
- search marketing strategy and implementation
- project management
- web metrics and analytics
- team leadership and agency management

Career evolution might look like this:
Develop web properties -> manage web properties -> advocate usability -> market web properties -> measure web visitor behavior -> listen to web audiences -> engage in the web conversation with your audience in a human voice.

For me anyway the Cluetrain Manifesto embodies many of the paradigms that have evolved on the web. Why not use that document to frame up a job description for the Emerging Media Marketing role?

--- Begin Job Description Idea for the Emerging Media Marketing role ---

"A powerful global conversation has begun. Through the Internet, people are discovering and inventing new ways to share relevant knowledge with blinding speed. As a direct result, markets are getting smarter—and getting smarter faster than most companies." - Cluetrain Manifesto

Description of responsibilities

* Be the leader for marketing Best Buy’s brands, products, initiatives, services, et al via Social Media, Mobile, and Video.
* Lead direct reports and agency partners
* Strategy/Budget/time line/project management responsibility
* Inspire/Generate ideas
* Develop an internal/external network to get the above done.

Basic Qualifications

* 10+ years web/online marketing and/or Agency experience with 3+ years developing and directing search marketing and/or online community and communications initiatives.

* Bachelor's Degree

* A positive engaging online presence - Experience with emerging media & record of having used it extensively:

1. Active Twitter account at least 1 year old with 150+ followers
2. Active Facebook account
3. Active LinkedIn account with 150+ connections and 24+ recommendations
4. 3G Smart phone Owner/User for at least a year (iPhone, Android or other)

* 5+ years experience leading cross-functional teams in achieving a unified goal

* 5+ years Experience with web property measurement and analysis

Preferred Qualifications

* Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative Web Analytics reports such as those generated by Omniture SiteCatalyst, or Foresee Results.
* Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
* Strong influence management capabilities
* Ability to create great working relationships with all levels within the company and across multiple disciplines.
* Superior communication and writing skills
* Committed to staying on top of emerging technologies and developing new programs and strategies accordingly.
* Ability to move from a technical project status meeting in IT to a creative marketing meeting, and be able to understand and participate with both on equal footing.

other

* Keen sense of curiosity and hunger for knowledge
* A desire to make a difference

--- End Job Description Idea for the Emerging Media Marketing role ---

My idea for the Emerging Media Marketing role

I didn't have complaints with the bulk of the job description. You've done a great job at quantifying as much as you can.

However, I think the "250 followers" metric for Twitter won't prove anything. It would be great if you could make this subjective, rather than objective. That means the requirement would be "an active Twitter account with followers that match with the content of your feed."

Yes, most average people can rack up 250 followers simply by existing, but I'd rather see someone who knows what to do with the tool, rather than a random chance that it's just working by function of how the tool can run itself.

So, there. That's really all I had to complain about, but Spike called me a whiner, anyway. Oh well!

My Job Description Idea for the Emerging Media Marketing role

POSITION
Sr. Manager, Emerging Media Marketing

DESCRIPTION
True Story. Best Buy loves Social Media, and we are looking for someone who feels the same way as we do about this medium. Our marketing department is looking for a Sr. Emerging Media Marketing Manager to strategically build upon our current social media channels while using their keen eye for emerging trends.

If you are a digitally tech-savvy trend-spotter who lives and breathes social, someone who’s on a network long before it becomes trendy (cough, Twitter), then keep reading. The ideal candidate gets social. That’s a given. This person also understands how social humanizes a corporation, letting the suits connect with the customer and ultimately helping make their lives a little easier. You can call it Building Brand Affinity, but we just call it good customer care.

Still with us? Good.
Emerging Media Marketing Role Must Ask Three Questions by Jeff Jarvis

Emerging Media - Multi-channel Marketing and Strategy Director will research value in a Googleized world and find strategic services that align with this new world.

Example:
“What if your goods cost you nothing?
What if you charged nothing?
Where does your value exist?”

Jeff Jarvis - "What Would Google Do?"

Implementation of digital multi-channel enterprise 2.0 (mobile, social, in-store, interactive) within a business will naturally cause disruption and power struggles inside the organization. On the outside, as the rise of the niche becomes more important than the mass, it will cause a greater immediacy for large organizations to start the mental shift internally sooner than later.

The Emerging Media - Multi-channel Marketing and Strategy Director will assist Best Buy with the emerging media technology-scouting as part of a bigger digital innovation and marketing team.

It requires someone from the outside with enterprise, entrepreneur, and VC experience. This individual would be responsible for strategic vision and creating a roadmap for multi-channel digital strategy. This role would manage a team that looks at digital tools for interactive, mobile, social, and emerging media devices and services and how they relate to humans to create happiness.

Do you have an employee in store who is passionate and innovative? A true gadget junkie who loves to talk to customers?
Is this nominee connected online?
RE: Job Description Emerging Media Marketing Manager

Apart from the seemingly arbitrary requirement of 250 Twitter followers, I thought the initial job description was pretty good.

The job is Emerging Media Marketing Manager. In my opinion, the most important thing is to balance Emerging Media and Marketing. The ideal candidates should have social media *and* marketing expertise as well as some management experience.

job description

Here’s the overall perspective that informs my job description suggestions: We’re in the birth throes of something big - moving from a hierarchical to a social organization. If you look back to the industrial revolution, the easy part was the machinery. The hard part was getting people used to the psychological structure of hierarchical organizations. Now we’re undoing that and going in reverse is going to be just as hard and mysterious. While getting here was probably more difficult for the line workers who gave up freedom, going back may be the most difficult for managers, who’ll have to give up authority as they know it.

What do you want from the senior manager, emerging media marketing? Is it an operational role where their main job is to keep on top of what everyone else is doing and cherry pick the things you want to copy? Or is it to wonder about the future?

If the former, you want someone clever, quick and plugged in and I don’t have much to contribute to the discussion.

If it’s the latter then you need a thinker who’s not locked into the technology and doesn’t drink from the same source as the herd.

This is not a race to 140 characters, the most LinkedIn connections , Twitter followers or the quickest response to your competitors. Sure, you need that, but it sounds like your existing, technologically savvy people have those competencies.

You need someone who can challenge them. A critical thinker as much as a cheerleader.

After all, isn’t emergent media (and I assume you use that phrase instead of social media for a purpose) about complex systems and patterns arising out of simple interactions?

Don’t you want someone who can identify the complex systems instead of perfecting the simple interactions?

Rather than someone who can understand what’s going on with emerging media, how about someone who can intelligently “not understand” what’s going on. Who can ask a lot of good questions about all the assumptions that are zooming around.

What is less emergent than an expert, social media or other?

The fascinating thing is that we don’t know where this is going.

Where in that mystery do you want your deepest knowledge to be engaged? Voraciously reading the distilled wisdom of the pop gurus or peering around the corners with the panoramic thinkers?

The best indication (although not flawless) of an ability to do the latter is education, so I agree with your original impulse to require a master’s degree. However, I’d broaden it to require someone with rigorous education in two distinct fields. Business would be good, but not absolutely essential, for one of them. But then maybe art or psychology (since social thinking is a psychological phenomenon.) The more distinct the fields, the better because it shows this person can integrate ideas from all over and that’s where the nature of emerging media is grounded – all over.

You want a quick thinker, but not someone who comes to conclusions quickly. So gimmicky tests are out.

Think about the issues you personally are wondering about and engage them in a conversation. Are they curious? Can they mine indirection?

If you get an intelligent, critical and creative thinker who can show they’ve thought about the field in a non derivative way, they can learn what they need to know about the platforms.

Emerson said something to the effect that if two people are thinking alike, one of them probably isn’t thinking.

Why The Job Description For Emerging Media Marketing Role Shouldn't Have A Job Description

Social media changes by the minute; by the time you list out a set of "job descriptions" they have changed, so technically, that person is therefore no longer qualified for the job. See my logic?

So, with that in mind, I would ask three questions of the candidates:

1) Do you like the way Best Buy does business, its products and ethics?
2) Do you like to talk to people about that?
3) Can you adapt as your job description changes?

Yes, Yes and Yes should narrow the field down to a few thousand. Then you check out their online profiles to see how the candidates interact online. One link and bio should lead you all the info you need.

Mine is: (personal information removed)

Best of luck!
(personal information removed)
