BBY 'Cash for Clunkers' PC recycling program

There's a timely (but would have to be done very quickly) opportunity for someone to ride the coattails of the Cash for Clunkers program and hold a Cash for Clunkers Computer tradein program. Collect old computers for recycling, give people $200-300 off a new system. Would be a nice timing with back to school efforts as well. Could see this getting a little buzz as well. Intel would be the natural partner if they wanted to share the cost, but guessing that would take too much time to get into place.

This would be a good way for Best Buy to solidify itself as the best place to shop for all brands of computers.

Lower the price of Geek Squad services!

They simply cost too much! How can a software installation cost $30? I work in PCHO, and the services we offer are, in no way, consumer friendly. The prices should be lowered. Even as a promotion, lower the recovery disk creation to $15 and software installation to $10; these prices would made the service impulse buys! Customers would think "Why not?" The amount of impulse buys would definitely outweigh the price cut. Just test it out in a few stores. I’ve dealt with customers willing to do an installation, but after I tell them the cost, they change their minds. Instead of losing 100% profit, let's take a loss but still make something.

Offer data destruction with computer recycling

My retired laptops are piling up at home because I don't like the idea of a savvy computer person being able to pull my old data off of my old machines should I "recycle" them or throw them out. Would individuals or businesses PAY a fee for Best Buy to offer data destruction that guarantees computer material recycling and data destruction? http://www.renovods.com (Disclosure: I know the owner of this company.)

Text message updates for computers being worked on.

So my idea is to have text message updates for computers being worked on by the Geek Squad. A simple idea using a tool we haven't taken advantage of much.

When a computer is checked into our system for work we can send email updates, however new computer setups or anything small that didn't require checking in leaves the Geek Squad with no other option than to note to call the customer and hope they answer or leave a voicemail if something is wrong or their computer is finished.

My idea is a simple application that will allow customers who would like it the option to recieve quick updates via text message for their new computers or any computer not checked in for sevice.

This could be achieved with an application that would allow the Geek Squad members to input a unique I.D., similar to a Service Order number, but not as detailed, which would allow quick updates to be sent via text message. It would save the Geek Squad employees more time not having to call and wait for an answer, so that they can get back to work on the computers, and would let customers know their computers are done without interrupting what they are doing at that moment.

Stop Bundling Things I Don't Want with Things I Do Want!

I am really impressed by a couple of the new "Blue Label" laptops BUT I have absolutely zero interest in the Push2 adapter that allows for viewing laptop content on a television. Why can't I simply buy the laptop without the stuff I could care less about?

Make the Blue Label laptops a la carte!!

In-Store Advanced Interactive Help Station

Unfortunately, even though Best Buy employees try to help all their customers they all aren’t always helped. If there was an interactive station which includes: LCD touch screen, speakers, mic, headset, and more. This will allow the customer to get the best experience possible.

Example: Bob goes into Best Buy just to get a wireless router, but when he gets in the computer department there is no one to help. So he looks around and sees the NEED HELP center. He then clicks on the network icon and it will assist him on getting the right router. And if he requires additional help, then a live specialist will appear on screen to answer any questions. Also the customer can also scan products at this station for price check. Also it will display a map like view for each product that is searched to make it easier to find. And if the customer needs a Geek Squad Agent to set up the network then the live specialist on screen will set up appointments and take their payment with a credit card swipe or cash.

Will have discounts, coupons, gift cards and other depending on how long they had to wait.

Each department will have a few stations designed specifically for each department i.e., music/movie dept will allow customer to scan disc and get a preview.

Best Buy mini-stores

Just thinking, not sure yet whether I really like this idea or not, so constructive comments, etc., welcome!

What about smaller storefronts in places where a full-sized store wouldn't make sense? Probably a slightly different name - "Best Buy Mini", "Micro Buy", or other names.

I could see it being really popular during the Christmas shopping time if you had a mall presence where people could look at a few big-ticket items - computers, home theater, digital cameras. You can stock some smaller items, but just let the bigger items be delivered from full stores nearby.

And also carry a wall of new release blu-rays and games. You can definitely undersell the FYE's in our mall, and your new game prices could be better than the game stores.

Besides malls, there are some "downtown" type areas that are all the rage where a Micro Buy would fit.

Use Geek Squad to inspire confidence, not fear and loathing

You have a valuable asset in Geek Squad. But attempting to run it as a profit center is a mistake. The reason is that this incentives very poor decision making to increase the revenue from the GS business unit. For example, see the whole Geek Squad "optimizing" snafu.

Apple does not charge for the Guiness Bar. It is there to give people confidence that when they buy a Mac, Apple has their back. That there is a face (not faceless) place to go for help. That real technical problems can actually be solved.

Geek Squad, on the other hand, generates only confusion and mistrust. It has a bad reputation that is spreading from "those in the know" to the more general tech shopping public.

But there is a chance to really leverage Geek Squad into something that drives customers to buy with a level of confidence they cannot get anywhere else. Alterantively, if you stay the course, continually generate bad will and PR fiascos. The problem is not Geek Squad, it's rather their mission.

A company with the vision to implement ROWE certainly can certain navigate Geek Squad to be a real market differentiator.

More Apple Best Buys

I work at 217 in Aurora CO.

I realize this is not a strictly Best Buy decision, and Apple does have a say in it, but more Best Buys need to carry Apple computers. I get two or three people a day asking about the Macbooks, and we're 15 minutes from an actual Apple Store.

There is a Best Buy in Erie, PA (where I visit once a year) and they have no Apple products. There is no store within an hour of that store that carries a Apple computer.

In both these situations Best Buy is missing out on a large growth opportunity.

Less clutter on display

I'd like to see Best Buy's computer dept like the Apple store. The Apple store is clean and simple their tables just have the computers and their price. Best Buy is confusing with different sets of prices for their computers and like 10 different accessories, every thing looks cluttered! Also you can always find or schedule help at the Apple store

Best Buy should have a wider selection of items ...

Best Buy should have more external hard drive enclosures, more CDs, DVDs, video games, etc. There is no reason with the power of the internets that Best Buy should only have a few of something and that's all that is offered on their site. I can understand for in store, as square footage is limited, but online? Come on! Have everything ship out of one big warehouse to peoples homes or to a Best Buy store if they want it shipped there.

I'm part of the twelpforce and I helped this customer with her external hard drive problem. {link to personal information removed} If we had a wider selection, she might have bought from us. Just an idea I guess. =)

Offer a Reliable Laptop with Good Ubuntu Support

Ubuntu is nice but I am always nervous to put it on a laptop. Also, with so many laptops available it is difficult to know which laptops are reliable.

Produce a reliable laptop at an affordable price and I'd buy it. This may amount to offering one of Dell's Ubuntu laptops in stores.
