I couldn't agree more! Even the "Geek Squad" cables are ridiculously priced.

They certainly are. I have to go to Wal-Mart for affordable ones of the same type.

Yeah. Unfortunately for a lot of retailers, the days of "premium" cables is over. When everything was analog, gold-plated connectors and stuff mattered. With digital signals, like through HDMI, the "cleanliness" of 1s and 0s no longer matters, just that it is easily recognized as what it's supposed to be. The Geek Squad elite 8' HDMI cable sells for $81; I bought a 10' cable online for $7 and have had absolutely no problems with it.

While I wholeheartedly support this, they must be selling plenty of cables at those high prices to the "suckers" who don't know any better or area in a pinch.
Flag as inappropriateI must admit, the only time I've purchased Best Buy cables was when I needed a fresh set *that day* and couldn't wait to mail-order.

Best Buy is a business and they make money this way. If you want cheaper cables then you are more than welcome to go other places.

Yes BB is a business and I love shopping there but...
Flag as inappropriateLast year I got my free 19" TV from Verizon/Fios and I needed a 20 foot component video/audio cable. The idea was to piggy back off of my DVR box in the living room to the new 19" in the kitchen. From what I remember BB only carried component video cables (Red, Blue, Green) and I would still have to purchase 20 foot audio cable (red, white). That would be about $120. No thank you. Instead I did a search of RadioShack.com (I hate shopping there) and I found a 19.6 foot video w/audio component cable. All 5 cables in one for under $35. I selected in store pickup. When I went to pick it up I did a scan of the shelves and sure enough all they had were the really expensive stuff. No where in site was what I purchased on line.
To set it up I drilled a hole in the wall next to my main HDTV set into the closet. The cable runs up the wall and across the ceiling of the closet. In the closet, facing the kitchen, I drilled a hole near the ceiling and snaked the cables down to the level of the hole I drilled on the kitchen side of the closet where I mounted the TV set.
Get it together Best Buy.

Think about how much their heat bill is for each store. That cable helps pay for that.

I agree completely about the cables. It is crazy the prices sold for these. It is like movie theaters and popcorn. That is where all the money is made. I understand you got to sell tech at a low price to stay competitive but being charged $20 for a 6' usb cable is robbery. I have not bought a cable in a Best Buy store in years.

Just carry some other brands. Newegg is kickin your butt again on this one.

@weicheltb - As a bby employee, I get complaints daily that there are "too many choices". We try to give as many options without making people feel overwhelmed.
Flag as inappropriateYou also need to take into consideration that in days like these, core products have little to no markup. Having a store that has people there ready to help you (giving you information you would have a hard time weeding out online) costs money. Sites like newegg just have companies ship their stuff when they need it, almost no overhead. If bestbuy didnt have markup on any of their products, they would go out of business.

Best Buy could offer to beat prices of the items needed or accept the item back if I can purchase it for less at another retailer. Best buy can also allow me to search the web for a lower price so that they can offer me the best price match at that time.

@morningisbad: Markup is one thing. An increase in profit margin, when you're making little or no profit on other items, or even losing money on them is understandable. But there has to be some reasonable cutoff. Like I said, I got a 10' HDMI cable for $7 (see my earlier comment). Even if we assume the Geek Squad Elite 8' HDMI cable, at $81, is using unnecessarily superior materials, the markup has to be at least 200-300%. I consider that price gouging. For the convenience of going to an actual store, I might pay $14-20 for a 8' cable. But $81? Yeah, that's not gonna happen. Hope you enjoy NOT getting any of my cable business.

First of all, we have Dynex, RocketFish, and Geek Squad branded HDMI cables, which are cheaper than the Monster cables.
Flag as inappropriateSecond, the Monster cables are actually A LOT better than the cheap crap cables. The Monster cables are built to transfer huge amounts of data with minimal to no interference from other sources. And they actually do make the picture quality A LOT better than the cheap stuff.
If you want good quality, you have to pay for it. As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for."

"…the Monster cables are actually A LOT better than the cheap crap cables."
Flag as inappropriateOnly in a few cases. There are some situations where the cable matters. Monster built its reputation on those few cases, then made a business of charging a ridiculous premium for all the other cases where their cables are total overkill.
In many situations, Monster is selling snake oil.
Regardless, Best Buy should provide lower-cost cables for those who want them.
