Create Electronic Receipts

Similar to Apple, allow me to have my receipt emailed to me rather than having to print out a physical receipt. Makes it easier for keeping track of receipts and cuts down on paper consumption.

Great idea! - Maybe have it linked to the Reward Zone card. As soon as the card is scanned it would automatically do whatever the customer has chosen: e-mail the receipt, printed or both.

That is a great idea as I try to stay on the receipts but sometimes they get misplaced.

I like Paul's Idea. Keep in mind that Reward Zone members can look at all of their purchases on the RewardZone website.

When I encountered this idea at the Apple Store, it was a little weird not physically walking away with a receipt and trusting my email address was entered correctly. After it all worked out, I realized it was awesome - it'll always be stored in my email account.

Within Best Buy Mobile, we do have the option to email the customer a copy of their new Cell Phone Contract which does cut down paper...most customers seem to like this idea...

I love the idea of sending it to the guest's e-mail, but also linking it to an online archive linked to their RewardZone card. That would be so helpful!

Thanks for the idea. We’ve been discussing the opportunities and challenges of electronic receipts for a while now. No decision has been made yet, but your voices help.

I like the idea to a point. When I go to this gas station and pay with a debit/credit card, they ask me if I want a copy. I usually say "no" as its just more paper to throw away.

Having the option to have a receipt or not would be great, but for those that have it emailed out... well how to I prove to the Loss Prevention guy at the door that I paid for my stuff without one?

Better yet, save the purchase history in my reward zone account and show me my warranty information for each item and let me select the transaction and print a receipt at home. Save this information as my preference at your point of sale system so you don't even have to ask me.....

yes having the option for an emailed reciept is a great idea, but from an Asset Protection perspective we need to have hard copies of the receipt to do our job. we cant keep asking the employee who rang the customer up if everything was rung up correctly.

With reward zone, you can already view your purchases. Wouldn't putting an electronic pdf receipt be easily attached to this? This will also create a large Reward Zone following for those that want electronic receipts, and allow for more direct marketing to customers e-mails

so this is my suggestion regarding the need to be able to tell at the door that the items have or have not been paid for.

yes to the electronic receipts. absolutely. but at a store level i know that stores like frys best buy and even walmart check a receipt on the way out. instead of the register printing a huge receipt, have them print a tiny little receipt that only has a barcode. that's it. you hold onto it until you get to the door, the person at the door scans the little barcode w/ a handheld gun (they all carry around some time of pen or highlighter to write all over your receipt anyways) and then the handheld computer pulls up a list of items that you bought from the barcode.

bam, you're good to go.

Yes to danicaliforina's idea about the barcode checking for the security guy up front. At least put like some sort of thank you stickers on paid for items instead those small pink stickers. they fall off easily and lead to getting the evil eye on the way out the door,

Dani suggestion is great. Also Thanks Fred for brigging this to our attentioned. Most LPs will scan the barcode with the transaction number and check it off, but somethings they need to check what actually was purchased. Unless when they scan the barcode in the small receipt it will show the whole transaction on their screen. Also geeksquad now has email inhome service receipts and service order status email notifications.

It really depends, some of adult consumers need these paper reciepts, some of adult consumers prefer e-receipts. But, I would really feel only Reward Zone members could have this option. Since tracking Reward Zone members could be much easier, when a cashier checks the Reward Zone card, it would show a sign saying 'E-Reciept'. But, I would also allow the cashier to ask 'E-Reciept or Papaer Reciept', so if you want a paper reciept someday, you could also get one.

Easiest way to do this would be just like Apple does it, ask the customer at the POS (you're already asking for their phone number, etc anyway). It would seem that a user's email address could become their primary identifier to Best Buy.

Hey all. Thanks for all of the great ideas and comments on electronic receipts! We wanted you to know Best Buy is excited about this idea and we are actively looking into ways to deliver electronic receipts for customers.

Because of this progress we are moving this Idea to "Reviewed" in the status with more updates to come. Keep the ideas coming in!

I love the idea, especially since I use my receipts a lot and it'd be great not having to store literally fifty Best Buy receipts in a folder, then realize later some are missing. But the problem is that when I walk out of the Apple store, I always feel weird, because I don't ask for a bag sometimes and I have electronic receipt, so it feels like I just took the product and walked right out the door. I've always found it interesting that the Apple people at the front are very trusting.

As far as AP goes, they're only checking for several small purchases or if you're trying to hide something. If you're buying larger items or stuff that's easily visible, they don't really care that much.

I was also going to make the comment that almost every customer who shops at Best Buy is either technologically inclined or ask access to email, so getting rid of paper receipts is actually a great way to reduce paper. I will agree that some people like to have a paper copy. For them, them you could probably print a receipt that's not very elaborate, but enough information to help the customer service desk give you a quick refund if need be.

Whoever suggested asking if the customer wants a receipt or not is a very good idea.

I love how Best Buy Mobile and Geek Squad already does this for contracts and service agreements. And I also really enjoy the thought process of those posting; I've worked as the man up front and in Mobile, so I appreciate people looking at issue from both angles (Asset Protection and Sales).

The e-receipt tied to an email address would also be really nice in decreasing fraudulent returns as well. But what about gift receipts? Would those be available in both paper and e-formats?

This is arguably one of the best features of the Apple Store. It saves on paper and printing, and it makes it easy to search my email for receipts at the end of the year. Great suggestion!

Update - I am in the loyalty program and just returned from a trip to Phoenix where we are conducting a test with Intuit on their quickreceipts platform. If you are an Reward Zone member and shop in Phoenix, you can use your RZ Number to register for QuickReceipts - free online e-receipts. The test went well and we are pulling all our learnings together to understand how we should scale. Will update more as we go. Also, we are also moving forward with enabling at point of sale, but have a few more operational things to work out like the lost protection comments above. Love feedback on the quickreceipts idea. Here's a link (but remember the test for BBY was only for Phoenix)

I like it, but it has to come with some customer education. This is a great innovation for those who already know, but for those who don't know anything about quickreceipts you will see very small impact. I would recommend a small kiosk near the front lanes and have an associate stationed there to explain to customers why it is so great. By suggesting that, I make the assumption that paperless receipts are less expensive as a company, just like when we offer customers the choice not to have a bag, it all adds up. If there is no cost savings to the company, then I would skip the customer education part, and just focus on presenting this to people who are in the know as a VPE.

I think Phoenix is a good market for this, you may want to link up with their local green initiative folks to help promote this test something like: http://www.arizonagreenchamber.org/Phoenix/

From a loss prevention standpoint, why can't there be a terminal at the door that is updating all of the transactions as they are being scanned? The agent would see the purchases coming through that need to be verified real-time. Once the transaction is completed, he can verify as the customer is leaving based on the information on the screen.

Email receipts is a great idea. Physical receipts do not last over time- the print fades away.

There should be a standard format for this though. So someday I can analyze my receipts similar to mint.com.

For example, they could attach an XML file to the email. Hopefully, there would be an industry standard.

You should definitely checkout what Whole Foods is doing with MyReceipts.com. All your receipts are store there and you can use your phone number number. It's great because it's green and I can get all kinds of savings based on what I previously purchased. Would be great if I could get my Best Buy receipt there too.

Wow, Best Buy, you guys completely missed the point on this. It's really simple. You just email the receipt. That's it. No dependence on a third-party, no customer education. This Intuit QuickReceipt junk is more corporate garbage thought up by bigwigs. The reason Apple's receipt system is so wonderful, which is likely why it was referred to by the poster, is that it is amazingly simple. Things should be as complex as necessary and no more.

I challenge Best Buy execs to go rent a car at National and receive an e-receipt when they return it... they'll get the idea.

BTW as a technology consultant I'd like to point out that your receipt paper savings alone can fund this project - not to mention using existing pos printers less = less maintenance.

In fact you could setup express registers completely without printers and really save money by not buying the printers in the first place. Kind of like the whole "are you just paying with plastic?" stations.

That would be a nice way to save ink and paper. Plus with an electronic receipt you can save it to your phone or iPod so you can show the customer service people that you have the receipt. Plus the paper receipts wear out so if your receipt wears out you are in trouble.

I work for BBY and they have implemented the option for you receipt to be emailed to you at time of purchase. As of right now, our machines will still print out a paper receipt, but hopefully BBY corporate is moving towards email only option.

Just as the associate that is ringing out your order to have your receipt email to you, and they will do that for you.
